Custom Processing

Want us to process your fibre?

Thanks for allowing us to add value to your fibre. Here is an outline of what you need to know about the process.

We have no minimum batch size, but we have a minimum charge of $100. All payments are due before the end product leaves our mill. For batches over 10kgs, you will need to put down a 50% deposit.

Our pricing structure is based on the weight of the fibre when it arrives at the mill. You will benefit yourself by skirting your fleeces to the best of your ability before bringing them in. Since skirting removes a lot of weight and contaminants from the fleece, it saves you money and results in a better end product. We will not process fleeces with excessive veggie matter, manure tags, or felted areas—you wouldn’t be happy with the results if we did.

Packaging your wool in clear plastic bags allows us to quickly identify your wool when we take it out of storage, and makes it easier to spot problems while you are still around to talk about them. We will not accept fibre in black garbage bags.

Please fill out the Intake Form as completely as possible, so that there is no need for a lot of back-and-forth emailing or calling later. When we receive your form, we will let you know what your scheduled date is for processing and outline any next steps.

You are responsible for getting your fibre to the mill and for picking up your end product. We may be able to arrange shipping for you, but you will probably find less expensive options since our energies are focused on adding value to your fibre, not on transporting freight.

All payments are due before the end product leaves our mill. Once we email or text letting you know that your processing is complete, we ask that you pick up your yarn as soon as possible—our storage space is limited, and we have other orders coming in. If a balance is left owing longer than 60 days on fibre processing, that fibre will become the property of Austin Woollen Mill.

Custom Fibre Milling Pricing

**prices will be calculated based on incoming weight**

Roving & Batts $38/kg

Yarn

Fingering/Sport weight (2- or 3-ply) $70/kg

DK/Chunky weight (2- or 3-ply) $62/kg

Lopi-style (single-ply) $55/kg

Processing a fleece always results in an end product that weighs considerably less than the raw fibre did. Usually between 25%-50% of the weight is lost, but sometimes more. This loss is the result of dirt and grease being washed away, and fleeces with excessive veggie matter and dung tags will lose even more in the skirting process.
